Russia can raise punishment for illegal semi-precious stone mining
KALININGRAD, Oct 23 (PRIME) -- The Russian government has prepared a draft law strengthening punishment for illegal mining of semi-precious stones, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Tuesday.
Speaking in amber-rich Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, he said that a 500,000 ruble fine for illegal amber production is effective only to a certain extent.
“It brought some positive results but even this fine is not effective enough: it did not fully stop production. So we have created a bill strengthening responsibility for unauthorized production of amber, greenstone and other semi-precious stones for those already accused of such crimes even further,” Medvedev said.
